Learning and development opportunities come from various city agencies and partnerships. Workplace safety training from the Health and Safety Team, craft apprenticeships co-sponsored by the department and labor unions, various professional soft skills from the Office of the City Administrator's (CAO) Training and Development Unit, Professional hard skills (continuing education) from subject-matter experts invited by department managers, disaster preparedness and emergency skills training from Public Works Emergency Management Program, and many courses from accredited institutions of learning with cost reimbursement from employee unions.
Training & Organizational Development
CAO-HR The Office of the City Administrator Human Resources - Training and Organizational Development works with City employees to provide opportunities for advanced learning and positive growth to support achievement of organizational and career goals. Workshops and facilitations provide practical, timely knowledge and skills that enable City employees to meet the special challenges of City employment. Their workshops also serve as a place to network and share ideas with others.

City University The Department of Human Resources created City University to ensure that San Francisco has the most educated and highly trained local government workforce. Through City University, the City funds a variety of courses taken at San Francisco State University College of Extended Learning, San Francisco City College, and UC Berkeley Extension. eLearning at the San Francisco Public Library
The San Francisco Public Library (SFPL) system is dedicated to free and equal access to information, knowledge, independent learning and the joys of reading for San Francisco's diverse community. Online learning includes free California DMV practice tests; accredited high school diploma as well as a career certificate in one of eight high-demand career fields; job seeking computer skills, basics about computers and the Internet, email, social media, surfing the web, and search engines. In addition to eLearning the library also offers both classes and workshops regularly taught by staff. Check the schedule to see when in-person learning will resume.

Well-Being & EAP The City & County Health Services department offers group exercise classes, interactive seminars, wellness coaching, and other special events. The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) offers support to deal with life’s challenges, connecting employees to helpful resources, and to encourage self-care and emotional well-being.
