Movie Leadership Series: Coach Carter
What is Movie Leadership? Movie Leadership aims to use inspiration from the movies to promote better leadership. Effective leaders can make a huge difference to an organization and its people but sometimes it is hard to become a better leader without a source of inspiration. Movies can be the perfect source and vehicle for inspiring leaders:
- They create interest and generate discussion.
- They use stories, one of the most historically powerful vehicles for changing behavior.
- They illustrate different leadership behaviors in an entertaining way.
- They often feature some of history’s most iconic leaders.
Coach carter is a highly entertaining movie, but packed full of great leadership behavior. It is the story of Ken Carter, who returns to coach basketball at his former school, and is based on true events. Rather than simply improving the team’s results, Carter truly believes he can improve his students’ lives. After the film we will have a discussion around four powerful leadership lessons identified in Coach Carter:
1. Set clear expectations 2. Have the difficult conversations 3. Stand up for what you believe 4. Encourage a team ethic |
The leadership principles discussed in this series are all taken from The Leadership Challenge by James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner, available on amazon. Coach Carter provides a great example of Kouzes and Posner’s leadership practice called, “encourage the heart.” Carter’s had a tough relationship with his team, but here he gives them the credit he feels they deserve, with recognition.
